Mentor Story – Val

Val has been a  volunteer mentor with us for 5 years at HMYOI Brinsford in Wolverhampton. During this time Val has worked with 5 young men.
When asked to describe his experience as a mentor with us Val said:

What comes to mind when I hear the word Trailblazers, is to express a willingness to undertake a service which I have been a part of, for almost 5 years. No pursuit of a monetary prize or recognition, because the optimist inside me, perhaps the idealist, spies a glimmer of hope. I understand that helping, see that time is worth it, believing that I try to inciting change and to make progress. In some way, large or small, I’m capable of doing good. Empathy and awareness simply come along with the territory. Most of the time, to volunteer means that I work side by side with a mentee making connection to another human being working towards a common goal. Making connections with the problem as well as making the solution, even the smallest gestures are making a difference. Connecting to a process in which I believe through my actions and involvement, is benefitting mentees as well as myself. After all, I’m freely giving my time to someone or larger than myself. Awakens my passions and my heart by volunteering for Trailblazers, something that is meaningful to me. “
