“Do it and get involved. You can really make a difference to an individual and help them change their life completely.”
Nick, Mentor at HMP Aylesbury
After successfully passing through our vetting and selection process we’ll provide full training, mentor shadowing and a whole host of information to support you. You’ll work with your carefully matched mentee 6 months before and 6 months after their release. You’ll be on hand throughout this time, meeting them every week inside the prison and out. Your mentee will want to make a positive change and will be prepared to provide the hard work, courage and commitment needed. As a mentor, you’ll need to provide them with the support and means to make their change a reality.
Chris, Mentor at HMP Aylesbury
Being a successful Trailblazers mentor takes a combination of real life skills and experience but most of all it takes commitment to wanting to make a positive difference to your community. Our mentors come from a wide range of very different backgrounds but what unites them is that they believe that young people make mistakes and that everyone deserves another chance.
If you are that kind of person and you are able to commit a moderate amount of time every week, you could be just the person a young person needs to help turn their life around. If you think you have what it takes to become a Trailblazers mentor then…
Emma, Mentor at HMP Wandsworth
The most rewarding thing about being a Trailblazers mentor is seeing your mentee turn their back on their old ways and step out into the world with optimism and hope for a successful future. But even the smallest changes in their behaviour and attitude along their journey will make a big difference to them and to you.
Being a mentor isn’t just about the big successes, small steps achieved everyday by your mentee will feel just as significant. Being a mentor also enables you to develop your own self esteem not to mention build important life skills and experience too.
Rodney, Mentor at HMP Aylesbury
Stephanie, Mentor at HMP/YOI Brinsford
The Trailblazers mentoring programme puts you on the front line of care for young offenders in the UK. After establishing a good working relationship with your mentee, you’ll be their first point of contact in many cases.
You’ll need to be on hand if they have any questions about their reintroduction into the community and you’ll need to be able to meet with them once a week at their prison.
Kate, Mentor at HMP Wandsworth
